Panchamukhi Hanuman is a form of
Lord Hanuman with "five-faced". Lord Hanuman assumed this form to
kill Ahiravan (or Mahiravan, who was step brother of Ravan, King of Patal), a
powerful rakshas, black-magician and practitioner of the dark arts, during the
Ramayan war. When Ahiravan had taken sleeping Lord Ram & Lakshman captive
in his palace Patal-Puri (the nether world), Lord Hanuman entered in Patal-Loka
and as per told by Chandrasena that the only way to kill Ahiravan was to
extinguish five lamps kept in different directions, all at the same instant.
Lord Hanuman assumed his Panchamukhi form and blew out the lamps simultaneously.
Thus killing demon Ahiravan, Hanuman rescued Bhagwan Shri Ram & Lakshman.
After Ahiravan was vanquished, God Shri Ram asked Hanuman to crown Makardhwaj
the king of Patal-Puri [Makardhwaj was the son of Hanuman who looks like half
Makara (crocodile) and half Vanara (monkey)].
